When Chris Cuomo was a guest on the July 26 edition of NewsNation’s “Dan Abrams Live,” he drew an audience of 187,000 viewers. While it fell far short of the ratings it got in its CNN era, it was more than triple the normal viewership for the fledgling news channel. Cuomo’s appearance, his first in public since being fired from CNN from November 2021, was a prelude to his new late night schedule on NewsNation.

October 3 was the launch date of “Cuomo”. and, as recently reported here on Barrett News Media, it pulled in 147,000 viewers.

Over the next three nights, “Cuomo” leaned into his early numbers:

  • Tuesday, October 4, 2022: 193,000 viewers; 21,000 adults aged 25 to 54
  • Wednesday, October 5, 2022: 174,000 viewers; 30,000 adults aged 25 to 54
  • Thursday, October 6, 2022: 156,000 viewers; 30,000 adults aged 25 to 54

In its nine nightly editions so far (October 3-7 and October 10-13), “Cuomo” has averaged 152,000 viewers, including 21,000 in the key 25-54 demographic, according to Nielsen. MediaResearch. While those numbers represent about a sixth of its CNN “Cuomo Prime Time” audience from the same week a year ago – a total of 849,000 viewers / 154,000 adults 25-54 on average from October 5-8, 2021 – NewsNation plus’ “Cuomo” more than tripled its previous recent timeslot occupant (a general program titled “NewsNation Prime”) among total viewers and more than doubled among adults 25-54, comparing it to weeknight data Sept. 12-30, 2022 (“NewsNation Prime” – 47,000 viewers / 8,000 adults 25-54) “Cuomo” reached a series-to-date high of 25-54 on Wednesday October 12 with 46,000 (with 181,000 total viewers that night, his second best-ever so far).

If one follows the “rising tide lifts all boats” analogy, the presence of “Cuomo” also enhanced (for the most part) his surrounding prime-time programs. Here’s how they fared from September 12-30:

  • On Balance with Leland Vittert (7 p.m.): 50,000 viewers; 11,000 adults aged 25 to 54
  • Dan Abrams live (9 p.m.): 56,000 viewers; 12,000 adults aged 25 to 54
  • Banfield (10 p.m.): 49,000 viewers; 9,000 adults aged 25 to 54

And here’s how they fared from October 3-13, since “Cuomo” arrived at 8 p.m.:

  • On Balance with Leland Vittert (7 p.m.): 61,000 viewers (+22%); 12,000 adults aged 25 to 54 (+9%)
  • Dan Abrams live (9 p.m.): 86,000 viewers (+54%); 16,000 adults aged 25 to 54 (+33%)
  • Banfield (10 p.m.): 57,000 viewers (+16%); 7,000 adults aged 25 to 54 (-22%)

Unsurprisingly, the first “Cuomo” “Dan Abrams Live” benefited the most; it reached twice as many as 100,000 viewers during this period (specifically, 106,000 on October 3 and 5). Even “Cuomo” in “On Balance” once surpassed 100,000 viewers (103,000 on October 13).

While NewsNation still has a long way to go to catch up to its long-established cable news brethren in the ratings, having “Cuomo” on the night provided the 2-year-old news outlet a positive step forward.
